Community Guidelines

HauntMap exists for the curious -- the people who stop at crumbling ruins, who read the footnotes of local history, who feel the pull of places that don't quite sit right. These guidelines exist to keep this community a place worth being part of.

Who We Are

HauntMap is a free platform for exploring haunted locations, folklore, myths, legends and paranormal places worldwide. Our community includes solo explorers, history enthusiasts, folklore obsessives, dark tourism fans and paranormal investigation teams. Everyone is welcome. These guidelines apply to all users across the HauntMap website and apps.

What We Expect From You

When you contribute to HauntMap -- whether by submitting a location or sharing investigation notes -- we ask that you keep the following in mind:

Be accurate. Submit locations with honest, factual information. If something is reported or unverified, say so. Don't embellish or fabricate history.
Be respectful. Many of the places on HauntMap are sites of genuine tragedy, loss or cultural significance. Treat them -- and the stories connected to them -- with respect.
Be responsible. Do not encourage trespassing, vandalism or illegal access to any location. If a site is private property or restricted, say so.
Be relevant. Keep investigation notes focused on the location. This is not a space for personal attacks, unrelated content or off-topic material.

Content That Is Not Allowed

The following content is not permitted anywhere on HauntMap and will be removed. Serious or repeated violations may result in account suspension:

Illegal content of any kind, including content that promotes or facilitates criminal activity
Hate speech, discrimination or content targeting individuals or groups based on race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or any other characteristic
Harassment, threats or content designed to intimidate or harm another person
Content that encourages, glorifies or provides instructions for self-harm or suicide
Sexually explicit or pornographic material
Spam, advertising or promotional content unrelated to haunted locations and folklore
Deliberate misinformation presented as fact
Content that encourages trespassing on private property or disrespect of protected sites
Personal information about individuals posted without their consent

A note on sensitive locations. Some locations on HauntMap are associated with suicide, murder, abuse or other tragedies. We present this history factually and respectfully. Content that sensationalises, glorifies or trivialises these events will be removed.

Submitting Locations

All location submissions are reviewed by our team before going live. We check for accuracy, appropriate sourcing and respectful framing. We may edit submissions for clarity or factual accuracy, or decline to publish submissions that do not meet our standards. Submitting a location does not guarantee publication.

Please only submit locations you have a genuine basis to believe are of folkloric, historical or paranormal interest. Do not submit private residences, living individuals' addresses or locations where publication could cause harm.

Investigation Notes

Investigation notes are your personal record of a visit or research into a location. They are private by default. If you choose to make your notes public, they become visible to all HauntMap users.

Public investigation notes must comply with these guidelines. Notes that contain prohibited content will be removed when reported. Repeated violations may result in your account being suspended.

Other users cannot comment on your notes. HauntMap does not have a direct messaging feature.

Reporting Content

If you see a public investigation note or location entry that you believe violates these guidelines, please report it. You can report individual investigation notes directly within the app using the report button on each note.

We aim to review all reports within 5 working days.

Enforcement

HauntMap reserves the right to remove any content that violates these guidelines without notice. For serious or repeated violations we may suspend or permanently remove access to an account. We will always aim to act proportionately and in good faith.

If you believe your content has been removed in error, contact us at boo@haunt-map.com and we will review your case.

Changes to These Guidelines

We may update these guidelines as HauntMap grows and evolves. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent update. Continued use of the platform following any update constitutes acceptance of the revised guidelines.
